The social impacts of algorithmic decision-making
Algorithmic systems play an increasingly pervasive role in shaping our
daily experiences. Rather than existing in isolation, these technologies
are intricately woven into the fabric of social systems, creating
nuanced relationships between human behavior and algorithms. Studying
the societal impact of algorithms raises critical questions and
challenges, including measuring and mitigating potential negative
effects and exploring innovative ways to improve collective
decision-making processes. This seminar will explore two studies that
examine the influence of algorithms on different social systems, ranging
from cultural markets (e.g., Spotify) to algorithmic matching services
(e.g., romantic dating websites).
Andrés Abeliuk is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile and a researcher at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA). His research studies the interplay between algorithms and human dynamics in socio-technical systems. Using a multidisciplinary approach, he applies techniques such as machine learning models, optimization, game theory, and online experiments to guide collective behavior towards more efficient and equitable outcomes. In 2016, he received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Melbourne, Australia. His thesis was on the optimality and predictability of socially influenced online markets.
