Ein internationales Expertenteam – darunter auch Wissenschaftler*innen des Forschungsbereichs Adaptive Rationalität – hat untersucht, welchen Einfluss soziale Medien auf unser politisches Verhalten haben. Im Bericht Technology and Democracy: Understanding the influence of online technologies on political behaviour and decision-making der Gemeinsame Forschungsstelle (Joint Research Centre = JRC) der Europäischen Kommission identifizieren sie die Herausforderungen, mit denen wir konfrontiert sind, wenn wir politisch auf Online-Plattformen, wie beispielsweise Facebook, Youtube oder Twitter aktiv sind, die kaum öffentlicher Aufsicht oder demokratischer Kontrolle unterliegen. Die Ergebnisse sollen Bürger*innen, der Zivilgesellschaft und den politischen Entscheidungsträger*innen helfen, die Auswirkungen der Online-Welt auf unsere politischen Entscheidungen zu erkennen und Maßnahmen zur Sicherung einer partizipativen, demokratischen europäischen Zukunft zu entwickeln.

Dieser Bericht ist die zweite Veröffentlichung des mehrjährigen Forschungsprogramms Enlightenment 2.0 der Gemeinsamen Forschungsstelle der Europäischen Kommission. Fortschritte in den Verhaltens-, Entscheidungs- und Sozialwissenschaften zeigen, dass wir keine rein rationalen Wesen sind: Enlightenment 2.0 versucht, die anderen Triebkräfte zu verstehen, die die politische Entscheidungsfindung beeinflussen.
