Emotional management: State and Violence in Europe at the End of the 19th Century

During the last third of the nineteenth century, anarchist bombings were linked to emotional goals. They aimed to create fear and delegitimize the existing power by attacking important symbols. State powers in France, Italy and Germany were obliged to react against these attacks by specific forms of emotional management. The talk will deal with these reactions and engage with national particularities.

Heinz-Gerhard Haupt, emeritus professor at Bielefeld University, has taught at the European University Institute in Florence, the Université Lyon 2 in France, Columbia University, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences sociales in Paris, Bremen University, and the Martin-Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. His research deals with problems of modern nationalism in Europe, the history of the petite bourgeoisie during the nineteenth century, the history of consumption and, more recently, the comparative history of political violence after the French Revolution.
