On AI-Inspired Software Design

In this talk, Walid Maalej will discuss recent advances in software engineering and AI, in particular how foundation models and "Agentic AI" is revolutionising the way software is designed, developed, and tested as well as how software development is taught. Users and AI agents are becoming essential members of software teams; feedback a crucial concept. Additional human-centric, psychological challenges to match various mental models and to ensure critical thinking are emerging.

Walid Maalej is an award-winning software researcher, passionate mentor, and world citizen. As professor of informatics at the University of Hamburg, he teaches, among other things, software development to up to 700 students in a single room, using fun activities and pair-programming. His research interests include AI for Software Engineering, Software Engineering for AI, Requirements Engineering, and Human Aspects in Software Development. His work has received three Most Influential Paper Awards, has been cited a.o. by the US Government, and is adopted by multiple large companies including SIEMENS and SAP. He once learned as head of the informatics department how to "navigate a big ship through turbulent waters" including a pandemic and an exceptional budget cut.
