Algorithm Exploitation: Humans are keen to exploit benevolent AI

We cooperate with other people despite the risk of being exploited or hurt. If future artificial intelligence (AI) systems are benevolent and cooperative toward us, what will we do in return? In this talk, Ophelia Deroy will report on her findings from classic social dilemma economic games and a newly designed game of Reciprocity, showing that our cooperative dispositions are weaker when we interact with AI.

Deroy will discuss new questions and developments which have followed her initial project - one, regarding the relevance & limits of game-theory for studying social interactions with AI, and the second, regarding the cross-cultural and psychological dimensions to take into account.

Ophelia Deroy holds the Chair for Philosophy of Mind and Neuroscience, at the LMU in Munich, and is the director of the Center for Research in Experimental Aesthetics, Technology and Engineering at the University of London. She is interested in non-verbal interactions, notably between humans and AI agents, and leads an interdisciplinary research group with cognitive neuroscientists, computational scientists and philosophers.
