Memory Decline in Aging – a Crucial Role for the Anterior Hippocampus?

Memory decline in aging is of major concern for many older adults. The most age-sensitive long-term memory system is hippocampus-dependent episodic memory, which enables us to remember past experiences and predict the future. Longitudinal findings from the Betula project show marked inter-individual variability with regard to onset and rate of episodic-memory decline, and that altered hippocampus structure and function predict memory decline.

Models of the aging hippocampus, however, suggest that age-related alterations are restricted to specific hippocampus sub-regions, so analyses of the whole hippocampus are insufficient. In this presentation, some of the recent work on functional specialization along the hippocampus longitudinal axis will be presented, and an agenda for future high-resolution imaging studies of hippocampal subfields will be outlined.
