Information for university students
Student assistant jobs
Student assistants work with a member of the Center for Adaptive Rationality, supporting him/her on a specific project. The specific tasks differ between projects. Placement is limited and highly competitive.
Student assistant jobs are restricted to students who are enrolled at a German university, and have not yet completed a master's degree.
Duration: between 40,87 and 86,96 hours per month during the Bachelor's degree (B.A./BS.c. not completed); between 35,22 and 86,96 hours per month during the Master's degree (B.A./BS.c. completed).
Payment: 13,08 Euros per hour, net during the Bachelor's degree (B.A./BS.c. not completed); 15,02 Euros per hour, net during the Master's degree (B.A./BS.c. completed).
Interested candidates should send their speculative application (electronically in only one pdf and without photo) to arc-jobs@mpib-berlin.mpg.de.
Internships
Opportunities for internships are limited and highly competitive. We prefer students who already have experience and knowledge in our research areas.
The goal of an internship is to provide students with a better understanding of the nature and content of the research conducted at the Center for Adaptive Rationality. The student will work on a well-defined task, in close cooperation with a research scientist or post-doctoral fellow.
Internships are restricted to students currently enrolled in a University in an EU member country or holding an EU citizenship.
Duration: From 4 weeks up to 3 months
Payment: Full time internship: approx. 430 € per month; part time: approx. 215 € per month.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter (maximum one page), in English. In the cover letter, candidates should describe:
- their basic qualifications
- their goals and interests
- the research areas in which they are especially interested
- how their studies would benefit from and fit within the research carried out at the center
- the names of 2 or 3 potential mentors
- the desired start date and duration (for voluntary internships 4 weeks to 3 months and for mandatory internships according to the study regulations)
In addition to the cover letter, applications should include the curriculum vitae (in English), high school diploma, and—if applicable—university certificates. Applications should be sent electronically in only one pdf and without photo to arc-jobs@mpib-berlin.mpg.de.
Research visits
Our center allows for unpaid research visits. These visits are highly competitive and depend on the fit between the candidate's program of study and the research carried out at the center. Both EU and non-EU undergraduate and graduate students are elligible for research visits.

Supervision of Bachelor's and Master's theses
We offer supervision of bachelor's and master's theses. Opportunities for supervision are, however, limited and highly competitive, with preference being given to students who already have experience and knowledge in our research areas. Usually, students work on their theses after doing an internship within the group, or after working on a particular project as a student assistant.
Yet it is also possible for interested candidates to contact potential mentors, who may be interested in providing thesis supervision without the student having to work as an intern or a student assistant. Note, however, that students cannot—by regulation—be paid for writing their theses. Students looking for paid work in combination with a supervision opportunity should thus apply to a paid internship or a student assistant position (as described above). Under such hiring regime, students are only allowed to work on their thesis outside working hours.
