Gerd Gigerenzer, Director Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Director of the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of Potsdam, has been elected Vice-President of the European Research Council (ERC) for the Social Sciences and Humanities, taking office on January 01, 2024, succeeding Evelyn Crone.

He is one of three Vice-Presidents assisting the President and representing the three ERC domains (Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Engineering). These are also the Vice-Chairs of the Scientific Council.

The ERC was established under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union. The 22 members of the ERC Scientific Council are appointed by the European Commission on the basis of a search process carried out by an independent Identification Committee. The general tasks of the European Research Council include defining and deciding on the ERC's scientific funding and management strategy, as well as monitoring and controlling quality and performance, and evaluating the quality of activities and making recommendations for improvement.
