Supporting self-regulation skills in children and young people in day-care centres and schools

September 12, 2024

The Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina has published a statement on ‘Supporting the self-regulation skills of children and adolescents in day-care centres and schools.

Over the past two years, the statement was drafted by an interdisciplinary working group, which included Ralph Hertwig, Director of the Center for Adaptive Rationality, and Ulman Lindenberger, Director of the Center for Lifespan Psychology. The working group addressed the question of how the promotion of children's and young people's self-regulation skills can become another central component of the German school and education system on the basis of scientific findings.

The statement is orientated towards the values of individual development and responsible coexistence: self-regulation skills are not only important for stable health and good education, but are also essential for successful social relationships, cultural participation and active democratic co-determination.
