Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Solà
Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Solà, an acclaimed artist duo, will be joining the Artist & AI Residency from August to December 2024. Since 2009, their work has explored the intersection of art, technology, and society, with a particular focus on the impacts of the digital age.
Currently, Varvara is an Assistant Professor in Computational Media and Arts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (GZ), while Mar is a PhD candidate at Tallinn University and a research fellow at Cudan Open Lab. Together, they bring a rich academic and creative background to their projects, frequently combining innovative artistic techniques like AI, kinetics, and digital fabrication with insightful social commentary on technology's role in modern life.
Varvara and Mar have exhibited their work at prestigious institutions worldwide, including MAD in New York, FACT in Liverpool, and the V&A Museum in London. Some of their recent projects include "A Needle in a Haystack" (2024), which challenges the perceived omnipotence of AI and questions our extensive reliance on technology, and "Visions of Destruction" (2023), an interactive artwork highlighting the humankind’s impact on ecological destruction and the urgency to correct the course. They also contributed to “The Meaning of Creativity in the Age of AI”, a publication exploring the intersection of AI, art, and design, as well as the potential and risks of this technology.
During their residency at CHM, the artists will contribute their unique perspectives to the Center’s ongoing projects. Check back later for more updates on their activities during the residency!
