Promoting Healthy Aging

Language Learning and Physical Exercise

Physical and cognitive inactivity are important risk factors for cognitive decline, not only in neurodegenerative diseases but also in the normal (non-pathological) range of functioning. In recent years, it has been shown repeatedly that the structure of an adult brain can change in response to altered environmental demands. So far, however, relatively little is known about such plastic changes in older individuals and how a physically and cognitively active lifestyle can positively influence brain structure and behavior in light of senescent changes. In a series of studies, we are investigating whether different cognitive and physical training regimes or the combination thereof can boost cognition and trigger plastic structural changes in healthy older adults.
