Artist duo joins Artist & AI Residency
The artist duo Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet Solà are set to join the Artist & AI Residency at the Center for Humans and Machines (CHM) from August to December 2024. Renowned for their innovative exploration of the intersection of art, technology, and society, the pair has been creating thought-provoking work since 2009, particularly focusing on the profound impacts of the digital age.
Currently, Varvara is an Assistant Professor in Computational Media and Arts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (GZ), while Mar is a PhD candidate at Tallinn University and a research fellow at Cudan Open Lab. Together, they bring a rich academic and creative background to their projects, frequently combining innovative artistic techniques like AI, kinetics, and digital fabrication with insightful social commentary on technology's role in modern life.
Varvara and Mar have exhibited their work at prestigious institutions worldwide, including MAD in New York, FACT in Liverpool, and the V&A Museum in London. Some of their recent projects include "A Needle in a Haystack" (2024), which challenges the perceived omnipotence of AI and questions our extensive reliance on technology, and "Visions of Destruction" (2023), an interactive artwork highlighting humankind’s impact on ecological destruction and the urgency to correct the course. They also contributed to “The Meaning of Creativity in the Age of AI” (2022), a publication exploring the intersection of AI, art, and design, as well as the potential and risks of this technology.
During their residency at CHM, the artists will contribute their unique perspectives to the Center’s ongoing projects. The Artist & AI Residency Program at CHM provides a platform for artists to explore the transformative potential of technologies like AI and machine learning within traditional art forms. By supporting artists who incorporate these technologies into their creative processes, the program aims to foster new forms of expression while critically examining the increasing role of AI in art production. Varvara and Mar will be the second artists to participate in this residency, following Karim Ben Khelifa.
