All mobile organisms must track their movements in space, and remain oriented to the external world. The evolution and development of these capacities has been the focus of a great deal of research in cognition, neuroscience, development, ethology and individual differences. Collectively, the resulting data provide a rich testbed for evaluating various approaches to understanding the human mind/brain. This talk will provide an overview of the theoretical terrain, advocating for a neuroconstructivist account.

The annual Paul B. Baltes Lecture was initiated to commemorate Paul B. Baltes’ achievements for psychological research and his contributions to strengthening collaboration among psychological institutes in the Berlin-Potsdam area. The lecture series is hosted by the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Potsdam in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, and is supported by the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation.
