Synaesthesia is a non-pathological sensory phenomenon that co-occurs with autism. Recent evidence suggests further an autism-like profile of altered perception in synaesthetes, but also that it might correlate with a range of other diagnoses and traits. My team conducts twin studies in order to investigate these associations and their genetic and environmental contributions. Further, we are taking a closer look at perceptual alterations in synaesthesia and autism, and whether the latter are truly similar.
Janina Neufeld is Associate Professor (docent) and research team leader at the Center of Neurodevelopmental Disorders at Karolinska Institutet (KIND), Department of Women's and Children's Health at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. She studied Biology at the University of Bielefeld and conducted her PhD in Neuroscience at the Hanover Medical School, Germany, and completed postdoctoral training periods at the University of Reading, UK and Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm.
