Practice Theory and Practicalities

Barbara H. Rosenwein compares the key approaches and methodologies currently in use in the history of emotions by considering their practical application. Particular attention is paid to practice theory. A short primary source from the seventeenth century—the record of an oral testimonial by a Puritan believer—is used as a test case. The major purpose of the presentation is to invite discussion about the uses and difficulties involved in applying the approaches.

Barbara H. Rosenwein, professor emerita Loyola University Chicago, is a historian of the Middle Ages and of the history of emotions. She is the author of Emotional Communities in the Early Middle Ages (Cornell, 2006) and Generations of Feeling: A History of Emotions, 600-1700 (CUP, 2015), translated into Italian as Generazioni di sentimenti. Una storia delle emozioni, 600-1700 (Viella, 2016), and she has just completed with co-author Riccardo Cristiani What is the History of Emotions? for Polity Press. Her next book will be Anger in Yale’s series on virtues and vices.
