Multi-Method Approach

Our investigations combine multiple methods. We use mobile phones to assess experiences—such as events, behaviors, feelings, or thoughts—at the moment of their occurrence, and within the context of a person's everyday life. This technology also makes it possible to assess fluctuations in cognitive capacity. We combine this method with the monitoring of physiological parameters, such as physical activity, cardiac functioning, or hormonal processes. We also use lab-controlled experimental paradigms and behavioral observations in our studies.

Experience Sampling with Mobile Phones

Participants carry mobile phones with them while pursuing their daily routines. Several times a day, the mobile phone rings and thus signals the participants to complete an assessment instrument that refers to their momentary experiences. It can also include cognitive tasks. Participants' responses are immediately uploaded via the internet to a central server.
