Life is like a pinball game - the chances of health and prosperity are unevenly distributed. If you have a difficult start, success and advancement are difficult to achieve. Those who get off to a good start, on the other hand, achieve top scores.
Genes, environment, society - these are factors that we cannot freely choose, but which shape us and interact in an astonishing way. Traumatic experiences and life circumstances control the activity of our genes. Laurel Raffington at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin is investigating how genetic preconditions and social disadvantage interact at a young age and what we can do about it.
