Wave Field Synthesis Lab
Discover the world of sound in our wave field synthesis laboratory!
Wave field synthesis is a technology that reproduces sounds as if they are coming from different directions in space to create an immersive listening experience.

Wave Field what?
Wave Field Synthesis is a technique used in sound reproduction to create a more immersive listening experience.
How? – Wave Field Synthesis uses an array of speakers to create a realistic three-dimensional sound experience, making it seem like sounds are coming from specific locations in a space.
It achieves this by generating interference patterns that mimic the natural behavior of sound waves, enhancing immersion in applications like virtual reality, gaming, and soon also our research!
How can Wave Field Synthesis help answering research questions?
One example: Listening is ubiquitous and often seems effortless. However, older adults experience difficulties in multi-talker situationsin part due to declining auditory attention.
Wave Field Synthesis allows ecologically valid studies of the neural basis of declining auditory attention by simulating multi-talker situations in the lab.
More details how Wave Field Synthesis works?
In Wave Field Synthesis, a large number of speakers are arranged in a specific pattern around the listening area. Each speaker is given a unique audio signal that is slightly different in timing and volume. These individual signals combine to create an interference pattern in the air, which can be perceived by our ears.
The clever part is that the interference pattern is designed in such a way that it mimics the way sound waves would naturally interact in real space. This means that when you're sitting in the listening area, the sound waves from the speakers combine in a way that recreates the same sound field as if the sound was actually coming from the desired location in the room.
