The position is initially filled for two years (with an option for extension of one year). The position is available from July 1st, 2024 or later.

Job Description

The Center for Environmental Neuroscience (Director: Prof. Dr. Simone Kühn) investigates how the physical environment affects the individual. We conduct research focusing on the question whether and how the external environment (e.g. natural landscapes vs. urban areas) impacts brain plasticity as well as behavior using methods of functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging, georeferencing and image analysis of photographs. By providing a better understanding and quantification of the relationship between the environment and the brain, we hope to influence the designing of physical environments in ways that will optimize well-being and cognitive functioning as well as human mental and physical health.

We have access to a research-only 3T MR scanner, as well as a virtual reality (VR) lab and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). In the coming years, the newly established Max Planck Dahlem Campus of Cognition at the MPIB will provide additional access to a new 3T MR scanner and a 7T MR scanner. Our research group is located at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (MPIB) in Berlin with an international working atmosphere. No German language is required for working at the MPIB. We are searching a postdoc with a strong interest in environmental neuroscience. A successful applicant needs to hold a doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, or related fields. Applicants should have a solid background the design, acquisition and data analysis of structural and functional MRI and documented programming skills (e.g. Matlab/R/Python/shell). Expertise in longitudinal intervention studies and the analysis of large-scale neuroimaging data sets would be appreciated. Prior experience with georeferencing and image analysis would be helpful but no requirement. The ability to work independently as well as a high proficiency of the English language is required.
