Shabnam Mousavi war zunächst Elektroingenieurin und erwarb sowohl in Wirtschaft als auch in Statisik an der Virginia Tech zwei Doktorgrade. Sie ist eine transdisziplinäre Forscherin, die viele Aspekte des menschlichen Verhaltens erforscht. Sie war Faculty Member im Fach Finanzen an der Johns Hopkins und an der Georgia State University und seit 2007 Fellow am Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung. Seit 2008 ist sie auch Mitglied des Wisdom Projektes der Universität Chicago. Sie war Präsidentin der Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Economics (2018-20). Shabnam ist Chefherausgeberin von Mind and Society, Mitherausgeberin von Behavioural Economics for Public Policy, sowie Mitglied der Redaktion von Journal of Behavioral & Experimental Economics. Sie arbeitet im Vorstand der Herbert Simon Society, im Lenkungsausschuss der BEFAIRLY initiative der Bank von Italien und in den Fachbeiräten von Evonomics, Panthera Solutions, den Ethics Labs of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), und den Behavioral Decision Making Labs der American University in Cairo.
Ihre Arbeit ist geprägt von der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit mit Fachkolleg*innen aus den Feldern der Psychologie, Wirtschaft, Philosophie, Statistik, Physik und Bildung und führte zu unzähligen Veröffentlichungen in verschieden akademischen Zeitschriften verschiedenster Disziplinen wie zum Beispiel Brain and Behavioral Science, Business Research, Economic Methodology, Quality Technology und Risk Management in Financial Institutions und wurde auch international beachtet, wie z.B. in Changing Business, Die Zeit, Johns Hopkins Health Review, John Hopkins Magazine, Neue Züricher Zeitung, Science News, CBC's The Current und Conversation. Sie ist Co-Autorin/Mitherausgeberin von Handbook of Behavioral Economics (2017), Behavioral Finance Revolution (2018), und A Fast and Frugal Finance (2019). Sie erhielt das "A Wisdom Project"-Stipendium von der University of Chicago, und das "Think Forward Initiative"-Stipendium der ING Bank. Derzeit arbeitet sie am Projekt "Lost & Found Emotions in the History of Economic Modeling"mit einer Förderung durch das Programm "Originalitätsverdacht" der Volkswagen-Stiftung.
