Seminar: Data-Driven Body-Machine Interfaces

Despite the recent strive for intelligent machine autonomy, teleoperation of distal robots remains of paramount importance in applications such as search for rescue, disaster mitigation, and remote exploration, to name a few. However, current interfaces require extensive training and lead to cognitive fatigue. In this talk Dario will describe his research on making such interfaces more intuitive and immersive. The goal is to understand and design novel interfaces that seamlessly bridge humans and non-anthropomorphic machines in a mutual symbiosis. To do that, he and his team developed data-driven methods to infer and personalize body-machine interfaces and wearable technologies that establish a bidirectional correspondence between humans and robots. Dario will show examples of these methods and technologies applied to aerial robots, including ongoing work on data-driven symbiosis between a human and an aerial swarm.

Prof. Dario Floreano is director of the Laboratory of Intelligent Systems at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He has been the founding director of the Swiss National Center of Competence in Robotics from 2010 to 2022. Prof. Floreano made pioneering contributions to the fields of evolutionary robotics, aerial robotics, and soft robotics. He is interested in deriving embodied intelligence from nature and using robots as models of biological systems. He held visiting research positions at Sony Computer Science Laboratory, at Caltech/JPL, and at Harvard University. He co-authored almost 500 publications and 5 books by MIT Press and Springer Verlag, spun off 3 drone companies (senseFly, Flyability, Elythor), and is in the editorial board of several journals, including Science Robotics. He received numerous awards, and is fellow of the IEEE, ELLIS, and ECLT societies.
