NFTs, Artificial Intelligence and Culture: A Conversation between Johann König, Iyad Rahwan, Anne-Marie Nussberger and Levin Brinkmann, with moderation by Anika Meier

Non-fungible tokens, or NFTs for short, have been around since 2014, but crashed into the mainstream in the early months of 2021. While NFTs have remained elusive to many, they are providing digital artists a new way to monetize and market their art, and are prompting countless headlines with their lofty price tags. As a novel technology and culturally influential object, the NFT market has even caught the attention of researchers at the Center for Humans and Machines.

In a salon where we use NFTs to pair scientific experiment with utilizing emerging technology in art, we welcome gallerist Johann König and journalist Anika Meier, both forerunners in the NFT community, to converse about the disruptive potential of NFTs with Managing Director of the Center for Humans and Machines Iyad Rahwan and Postdoctoral Fellow Anne-Marie Nussberger, who is piloting a project with research partner Levin Brinkmann about trusting advice from artificial intelligence through NFT purchases.

Johann König is a gallerist and founder of the KÖNIG GALERIE in Berlin. He was born in Cologne in 1981 and has been living in Berlin since 2002, where he founded his gallery for contemporary art in the same year. He realised pioneering exhibitions of upcoming and later internationally established artists like Tue Greenfort, Jeppe Hein, Annette Kelm, Michael Sailstorfer or Tatiana Trouvé. Since then, the focus of the more than 40 artists represented by Johann König has been on cross-media, concept-oriented and spatial approaches.

Anika Meier was born in Ulm in 1980 and studied art history and German in Heidelberg, while scholarships have taken her further across Europe. She is a columnist at Kunstforum, a lecturer at the Institute for European Art History at the University of Heidelberg, a freelance author for Monopol Magazin, Spiegel Online, Die Zeit, Goethe-Institut and Photonews, and others, and has worked as a freelance curator for the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig. She posts on Instagram as @anika and sends short messages on Twitter as @arte_fakt. She is also the founder of the collective This Ain't Art School (@thisaintartschool), which explores photography issues on Instagram.

The CHM Salon for Humans and Machines hosts conversations on AI and related topics with prominent voices from science and culture.
