In the ARD interview “Die Frage”, Shahar Hechtlinger, a postdoc at the Center for Adaptive Rationality, explains why the fear of making the wrong decision is particularly acute when it comes to far-reaching and irreversible life choices. She explains that such decisions alter one’s own perspective and identity and can therefore only be weighed up rationally to a limited extent in advance. Furthermore, such decisions are strongly influenced by social norms and expectations.
