ERC Consolidator Grant for Simone Kühn

BrainScape project receives about two million euros funding

February 02, 2023

Simone Kühn, Research Group Leader of the Lise Meitner Group for Environmental Neurosciences at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Head of a working group at the Centre for Psychosocial Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), has won the 2022 ERC Consolidator Grant. With the ERC Consolidator Grants, the European Research Council (ERC) funds the projects of outstanding scientists who have had 7 to 12 years’ experience after their PhDs, enabling them to pursue their most promising ideas.

In her research project "BrainScape", funded with a total of about two million euros, Simone Kühn wants to investigate over the next five years whether and how the physical environment that surrounds us every day affects our brain, our well-being, and our mental health. In the context of urbanisation and climate change, BrainScape aims to (1) identify the 'active ingredients' of the environment by introducing a more holistic understanding of the environment as a multi-layered complex phenomenon, and (2) gain insight into the pathways and mechanisms through which the environment affects the brain and mental health.

The research project will be implemented largely at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, but also at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. "I'm excited because this will link my two research groups at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf more closely together," says Simone Kühn.

In the 2022 call, Consolidator Grants were awarded to a total of 321 researchers in 37 countries with a total funding volume of 657 million euros. With 2,222 applications submitted, the approval rate was 14.4 percent. Of the EU countries, Germany is in the lead with 52 funded scientists. A total of 10 scientists from the Max Planck Society received funding.
