The 1970s are often described as an age of global crisis, a period of uncertainty, upheaval, depression and malaise. At the same time, however, the 1970s can be seen as a decade of hope. New forms of political action and personal and collective engagement arose in response to the political, economic and social challenges of the decade. Considering these two opposing perspectives on the period, we would like to approach the 1970s as a decade of intense emotions on a global scale, particularly because the sense of crisis was a global phenomenon that encompassed the state, social formations and the individual. In this workshop, we would like bring together scholars of the 1970s, from both global and emotions history, in order to discuss how these hitherto separate fields might engage with one another and contribute to a better understanding of the decade.

The conference aims to create a platform to discuss works in progress in the field of the history of emotions. Since the workshop will be discussion-based, papers will be pre-circulated among participants. Participants will present their papers in 8-minute talks across four panels. Each panel will additionally feature two discussants to comment on the papers (10-minute responses).

The workshop is open to researchers and students, however, due to copyright issues we cannot grant guests access to the written papers. Please note that active participation in the workshop discussion is limited to workshop participants only.
